Whether they knew it or not, travelers on an American Airlines flight to Boston on Wednesday night had some VIPs joining them onboard: 25 adoptable Chihuahuas. Transported from Kinder Rescue in Los Angeles to the Humane Society for Greater Nashua of New Hampshire (HSGN), the pups were being flown to a better future, thanks in part to the generosity of actress Katherine Heigl.

HSGN executive director Karen Bill and Kinder Rescue director Laurel Kinder had been trying for about three months to move a surplus of Chihuahuas from Hollywood to the northeast. Faced with an unbearably long drive and an expensive flight, solutions were scarce. But after contacting the Jason Debus Heigl Foundation — founded in honor of the Grey’s Anatomy star’s late brother and run by her and her mother — the problem was solved: The organization, which supports animal rescue efforts, offered $25,000 to fly the pups from the West Coast. “It was amazing,” Bill tells PEOPLEPets.com. “The ideal situation come true.”

Wednesday night, the 25 Chihuahuas were greeted at Boston’s Logan International Airport by volunteers from HSGN. Five of the animals went to the Salem Animal Rescue League of N.H., and the rest were happily situated in Nashua by 6 p.m.

Though staffers at HSGN haven’t spoken to Heigl directly, they plan to thank her heartily for her donation. “We’re putting together a photo CD of all the dogs, from the time we met them at the airport to the moment they go home with their new families,” says Bill. “We want her to know how grateful we are.”

The pooches — who range in age from about 1 to 4 years old — are currently undergoing medical evaluations and all have veterinary appointments Friday, and will be available for adoption on Saturday at 10 a.m. “The response has been phenomenal,” Bill says. “We had more than 40 voicemails Thursday morning from families inquiring about these dogs. I can guarantee we’ll have a line out the door starting at 9:30.” Soon all of the dogs will have Hollywood-themed names, too, to tie them to their L.A. roots. “We already have a Stallone, because he’s a little tough guy,” Bill laughs. “I think we’ll end up with a J. Lo, a Latoya, and more.”

While Chihuahuas are seemingly everywhere in Los Angeles, they’re somewhat more scarce in the northeast. “It’s a Hollywood-made crisis,” Bill says. “From Beverly Hills Chihuahua to Paris Hilton, people see these dogs and think they’re cute accessories, but they’re not. They’re living beings that need attention.”

Bill maintains they make great housepets because they’re relatively easy to take care of, can thrive in colder climates and are extremely loyal. “All 25 would have been euthanized if we didn’t take them,” she says. “We’re just so happy to be saving their lives.”

The Grey’s Anatomy star and newly minted screen queen has made a tremendous leap onto the A-List, counting herself among the top five of Hollywood’s highest-paid actresses, according to the Hollywood Reporter’s Women in Entertainment: Power 100 list.

The 30-year-old movie newbie, who made her major box office debut in 2007’s Knocked Up (which has grossed more than $148 million) and followed the comedic hit up with 27 Dresses, took the fifth spot on the prestigious list behind such powerhouses as Angelina Jolie (No. 1), Julia Roberts (No. 2), Reese Witherspoon (No. 3) and Cameron Diaz (No. 4).

In July, Forbes listed Heigl at No. 73 on the Celebrity 100 list, making her the highest-paid TV actress, with earnings at $13 million for her role as Dr. Izzie Stevens on Grey’s – which earned her an Emmy in 2007.

“This is my dream come true,” she said of her Emmy win. “I’ve been doing this for 17 years and people don’t count [the years] ’cause I started as a kid, but I counted because I’ve worked my a– off.”

So what’s up with Katie. The Emmy nomination thing seems to have been going on forever. People are wondering if her character will be kicked out of the show, even as the creators say that she is staying. But I guess we’ll see that in the future.

They arrived at the Cancun International Airport in Mexico yesterday, and Katherine Heigl and Josh Kelley didn’t waste any time before hitting the beach. The “Knocked Up” babe and her “Hey Katie” crooner were spotted prancing around in the Mexican sun, enjoying a few drinks as well as publicly displaying their affection for each other. Heigl looked fit in a metallic pink bikini and oversized white beach hat with shades while Josh went shirtless in a pair of white cargo-style board shorts with a khaki fedora-ish hat.

According to reports, the Mexican getaway is in celebration of Heigl’s completion of her latest film “The Ugly Truth,” slated to open April 3rd of 2009 and starring Gerard Butler and Cheryl Hines.

KATHERINE HEIGL has upset staff on the set of GREY’S ANATOMY after withdrawing from the Emmy awards as part of a protest about her character’s development on the hit show.

The actress insisted her name be left off the official ballot because she felt her character was awful during the most recent season of the medical drama.

But the move has disgruntled workers on the programme.
A source tells America’s Entertainment Weekly, “The show bent over backwards to accommodate her film schedule, and then she criticises the show for lack of material?

“It’s an ungrateful slap in the face to the very writers responsible for her Emmy win in the first place.”

Heigl won the Best Supporting Actress prize at the Emmys last year (08). She has since established herself as a movie star with roles in Knocked Up and 27 Dresses.

Katherine Heigl will not be an Emmy contender this year. The “Grey’s Anatomy” star, who won Best Actress at the Emmys last year, has pulled her name from the list of contenders for the 2008 ceremony, blaming her withdrawal on the show’s scripts.
“I did not feel that I was given the material this season to warrant an Emmy nomination and in an effort to maintain the integrity of the academy organization, I withdrew my name from contention,” she told the Los Angeles Times’ Gold Derby.

During Heigl’s Emmy-wining Season 3 performance, “Grey’s Anatomy” was watched by 18.7 million for the season. Season 4 was seen by 14.4 million people on average.

Katherine Heigl will star in and produce the feature film adaptation of “Escape,” the bestselling memoir of Carolyn Jessop, whose testimony helped convict polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs.Relevant Entertainment and Como Court Prods. acquired the book. Michael Menchel and Cat Williams will produce with Heigl and her Abishag partner Nancy Heigl.

Jessop was born into the Fundamentalist Church of Latter Day Saints sect. At 18 she married a man 32 years her senior; at 35, she fled with her eight children.

Equity financier Como Court Prods. will pay to develop the script.

Relevant was started by Menchel, the former longtime CAA agent who became a manager at Artists Management Group before shifting to producer. The shingle has set up several projects at studios including a Paramount film Menchel is producing with Simon Cowell about tenor Paul Potts and the family film “The Tortoise & The Hippo” at Walden Media.

Heigl is shooting the Robert Luketic-directed Sony/Lakeshore comedy “The Ugly Truth.” Abishag projects include “Alpha Moms,” a Ryan Shiraki-scripted comedy for Warner Bros., which the Heigls are producing with Code Entertainment’s Larry Kennar and Rick Berg, and the Fox 2000/Spyglass action comedy “Drawn Together.”
